Ways to Prepare For the Inevitable in 2018

For me, 2017 was like being on a rollercoaster.

I’m so happy I was finally able to get off that ride last night, to kiss the year goodbye and look forward into 2018. I have a lot of great plans for this year. The thing is – don’t we all? None of us ever truly plan bad things to happen, or to be put into uncomfortable situations…it just happens. BAM.

I’ve been sitting here rolling my eyes at all the “New Year, New Me” posts everywhere I look. Let’s get real kiddos – life is:

random,

inconsistent,

unpredictable…

…so why do we treat 2018 like we can control it? Instead, let’s prepare for when things do crash and burn, rather than play ourselves as if it’s going to be a perfect year. Because nothing is perfect, my loves!

I’ve decided to list off 18 ways to take care of your happy or broken heart in 2018:

  1. Evaluate Relationships

Is anyone in your life causing you stress or unhappiness often? Are there amazing people you don’t reach out to enough? Think about this throughout the year.

     2. Talk to People

Talk to people when you’re feeling down, communication can be the best medicine.

   3. Take a Social Media Break

Remember what it’s like to live in the moment. Delete some apps for a few days every once and a while to rejuvenate human connection in your life!

   4. Channel Your Energy into a Passion

Writing, Painting, Photography are some healthy ways to channel energy. Don’t spend your time of day feeding into drama, thinking about yourself in negative light or going back to toxic people/habits. Channel energy wisely.

5. Reflect Weekly in a Journal

  6. Constantly Take Action

End societal stigmas. Do charity work. Tell a friend you love them. Do not put off to tomorrow what can be done today!

 7. Make Lists

Did you know it’s psychologically healthy to make lists? It reduces anxiety, exercises a part of your brain that normally wouldn’t get used, improves your focus, increases self-esteem, and organizes your thoughts.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Talk Back

Sometimes, talking back can help you to stand up for yourself, your loved ones, or beliefs. Just know the right time and place.

   9. Eat Your Favourite Food

Enough said.

   10. Snuggle a Pet

Ever since I adopted Wilfred, the amount of panic attacks I have has gone down tremendously. Pets are awesome.

11. Hangout with Family

They’ve always been there, and always will be. My extended family has been my biggest support in everything I’ve done/gone through, and my cousins are the only ones who are able to mend my broken heart.

12. Start a Memory Jar

I did this in 2014, and I think I’m going to do this again. At the end of the year, open the jar and read through the memories you made in 2018.

13. Tell People You Love That You Care About Them

It’ll make you feel great, and they will appreciate your kindness.

14. Make Time for Traditional Self Care

Watching movies, taking baths, baking cookies, doing face masks, meditating. They’re all your classic forms of self care, and no matter how busy life gets you should always make time for classic self care once and a while.

15. Write Letters

Slip them under your roommates doors, mail them to friends who live far. Everyone likes getting mail, and the universe will send the good vibes back your way!

16. PRIORITIZE

It’s okay to quit things to grow another part of you. It’s okay to take 5 minutes out of studying to text a friend and shoot the shit. It’s okay to prioritize certain people over others. Your happiness is all that matters, and if 2017 taught me anything, it’s that.

17. Switch Things Up

Rearrange your room. Take a new route to work in the morning. Start a new routine!

18. Throw Away Negative Vibes

Literally. Write down negative thoughts you have and go somewhere cool and destroy it. Burn it in a campfire. Throw it off a bridge. Rip it into a million little pieces and throw it away. Kill those vibes!!!!!

I hope 2018 treats you all with respect and doesn’t rip you a new one too soon! 😉
